What is a Alpha Channel?

The "color" channel which contains transparency information. A pixel with a higher alpha value is more transparent. Alpha channels are used extensively in video and composite still image production. In 32-bit color, the first 24 bits are used to specify Red, Green, and Blue channels and the last 8 bits determine the Alpha channel.
